Arsenal set sights on Luiz from Aston Villa

After what has turned out to be a savvy summer transfer window, that has seen Arsenal begin to re-establish themselves as a top-four club in the Premier League again, it seems that the Gunners could well build on that in January.

According to reports, the Gunners could be about to move for Aston Villa’s defensive midfielder Douglas Luiz as manager Mikel Arteta searches for a quality option.

Luiz is someone who appears to fit the bill, with the 23-year-old having been a standout performer in the Premier League this season, which has caught the attention of the Gunners recruitment staff.

Just what Arsenal need?

Capped nine times by Brazil, Luiz has been a consistent performer in the Premier League over the last few seasons and is well attuned to the pace of the English top flight. Currently, Arsenal possess a number of options in that role, however, they are deemed to be not at the level that Arteta would like from a specialist holding midfielder.

Having been signed two years ago by the West Midlands outfit for £15 million, Luiz is also someone who Arteta knows well from his days spent at Manchester City while serving as assistant to Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Luiz also has the seal of approval from former Arsenal star Ian Wright, when following Villa’s 3-0 win at the Emirates stadium in November 2020, the ex-player heaped praise on the Samba star: “Someone like (Douglas) Luiz, he is ready to be one of the best midfield players in the Premier League. He is so under-rated.”

Under Arteta this season, the club have looked a lot more defensively solid though the presence of Luiz would give them more of a combative nature in the centre of the pitch.

Any other priorities for Arteta?

While the board have shown that they will back their manager, after laying out over £125 million in the summer, that does not mean that they are going to necessarily splash the cash on just anyone in January.

It is understood that the manager wants new striking reinforcements – essentially long term replacements for Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Eddie Nketiah is also reportedly surplus to requirements.

As a result, should one of these be moved on in January, then there could be at least one replacement this month if everything falls into place with Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak, Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton, Fiorentina hotshot Dusan Vlahovic and Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins all said to be under consideration.
