Aston Villa linked with Bologna ace Hickey

Last Updated on by James King

It could be an interesting January for the West Midlands club Aston Villa, with new manager Steven Gerrard at the helm and with the transfer window barely open, the outfit are already being linked with a host of names.

Sources in Italy are suggesting that they could be about to make a move for 19-year-old sensation, Aaron Hickey, who plies his trade for Italian side Bologna.

The left-back, who can also play in a central midfield role has been in Italy since September 2020, when his current paid €1.7 million to take him from Hearts.

Promising signs of a goal-scoring full-back

Under new coach Sinsa Mihajlovic, Hickey has become a regular, featuring on 20 occasions this term, also scoring five goals, while he also poses an attacking threat. Fans will be reminded of a young Gareth Bale, with his style, while he could also be the heir to current left-back Andrew Robertson in the Scottish national team.

A move to Villa could be a savvy signing for Gerrard, who is on the lookout for young, talented players for a reasonable fee and Hickey could be just that. According to Transfermarkt, he is valued in the region of £13 million, however, Villa will be confident of striking a deal in the region of £7 million, with add-ons likely.

Currently, Gerrard has Matt Targett who is a reliable option, while veteran Ashley Young can also do a job there, though the former Rangers boss has been using his ex-England colleague (Young) further forward since he was appointed.

It could turn out to be an astute purchase for Villa and, following his exploits in Italy, could certainly come in and hit the ground running.

Where else are Villa likely to strengthen?

Gerrard will be aware of the difficulties of trying to find players in the winter window, however, he may well have slight tweaks in mind – potentially in the form of loan signings, until the summer.

Villa are currently cemented in mid-table and will be looking to push on in 2022 and challenge for a European place, which means Gerrard may want a couple of players in to aid their quest.

Although there are a number of attacking options available to Gerrard, with Ollie Watkins, plus summer signings Danny Ings and Leon Baliey (the latter a £35 million arrival who is yet to shine), this hasn’t stopped them being linked with Flamengo’s £17 million-rated Brazilian international Gabriel Barbosa – previously of Inter Milan.

However, a number of clubs are reportedly interested in his signature, not least of which recent billionaires Newcastle United who will be looking to recruit heavily in the January transfer window.
