After what has turned out to be a positive summer window, in which the Gunners spent over £120 million, the club are keen to continue that momentum, having broken into the Premier League top four once more.
Should the north London club manage to land Guimaraes, who is arguably one of the best-rated players in his position in Europe right now, it would be seen as a significant coup and one that would certainly take Arsenal to the next level.
Guimaraes a substantial upgrade
Although Arsenal’s central midfield has held up well so far this season – often dubbed the ‘soft underbelly’ of their side, should a deal for Guimaraes be agreed, it would represent a major improvement.
What could also work in the Gunners’ favour is that director of football (and former player), Edu is also Brazilian and it could well help to sway the player’s decision. Guimaraes has the type of quality that both Gilberto Silva and even Edu and Arteta themselves had and would slot straight into the deep-lying playmaker role.
Despite a resurgence from Granit Xhaka this season in this position, Guimaraes is a natural successor and would be someone who Arteta can build his team around.
Interest from elsewhere
It is believed that the north London side are not the only club that has expressed an interest in the 24-year-old, with Juventus and PSG also said to be keen on his signature.
The Italian club who beat Arsenal to the signing of fellow midfielder and Euro 2020 winner Manuel Locatelli in the summer from Sassuolo, have submitted a loan bid for the player, however, Lyon are understood to want to insert an obligation to buy clause for £37.5 million.
Arsenal would have to act quickly if they are to secure the signing of a player who can be a huge difference-maker over the next few seasons and certainly take them up a notch in quality.
