The Premier League’s newest billionaires, Newcastle United are being tipped to flex their new financial muscles considerably in January as they look to surge out of the relegation zone and are understood to have identified a number of players.

One of these is striker Gabriel Barbosa, who plies his trade for Flamengo in Brazil and who is reportedly keen on a move, according to those close to him.

The 25-year-old who also plays for Brazil has scored 29 goals this season for his club and a move to Tyneside would see him link up with compatriot Joelinton who appears to be rejuvenated under the Magpies’ new boss Eddie Howe.

Who exactly is Barbosa?

After bursting onto the footballing scene with native side Santos as an 18-year-old, he was one of the most highly regarded players of his age, earning a move to Inter Milan in 2016. However, following a loan move to Benfica, his progress in Italy stalled, with the club being considerably well-stocked in the forward department, with options like Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku.

A permanent move back to Brazil in January 2020 with Flamengo, following a season on loan there has helped to rejuvenate his career and he played a crucial part in helping the club to win the Brazilian league 2019 and 2020 in addition to the Copa Libertadores (South America’s equivalent of the Champions League) in 2019.

One of the deadliest marksmen in Brazil, it is easy to see why he has caught the attention of Newcastle, in addition to a number of other Premier League clubs including West Ham United, however, one of the main reasons for his success at Flamengo is because of the on-field understanding he has built up with his teammates.

Paulo Henrique in particular is one who these, with the pair sharing telepathy that has helped bring much success to the club over the last couple of years.

Anyone else on the Magpies radar?

Reportedly, the Tyneside outfit have also pitched a proposal to Arsenal for Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, which would see the Gabon international join on loan in January with a view to a summer move. However, a move for two strikers in January, temporarily or otherwise, could depend on how long Callum Wilson is ruled out for.

Also, Atletico Madrid right-back, Kieran Trippier is understood to be on the verge of joining the club after a £16 million bid was submitted, while Howe also reportedly wants a centre back, with Lille’s £30 million rated Sven Botman, 21, linked as well as a couple of squad players as cover.
