Chelsea consider swoop for Barcelona’s Dest

It is believed that Chelsea are tracking Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest, as they step up their search for reinforcements in that area of the pitch.

With Barcelona keen to offload players in order to reduce their wage bill and fund transfers in the summer, Dest is reportedly one of the players who has been made available by the Nou Camp club and this in turn, has alerted Chelsea.

Following an injury to Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta having become a centre back in Thomas Tucehl’s preferred 3-4-3 system, it has left the club light in this area and Dest could fit the bill.

Would Dest be a good fit for Chelsea?

The 21-year-old built up a good reputation while at previous club Ajax, having come through their fabled youth academy, which led Barcelona to pounce for his signature in 2020 and while he has shown glimpses of quality, the Spanish club have a number of youth products coming through their own academy.

He should also command decent resale value as well, which would be advantageous to the Catalan club, while Tuchel has shown a talent for developing young players during his time at the Blues, which means this could be a move to suit all parties.

Dest is one of a number of highly talented young American players emerging in the European football arena and should he join Chelsea, he would link up with compatriot Christian Pulisic.

One area of his game that would particularly appeal to Tuchel is his ability to get forward; a trait that he excelled at while with Ajax. Under the German coach, Chelsea have built their game around specialist wing-backs, who are a vital component to the way that the team plays.

The player is also capable of playing on the left, which could certainly be of interest to Tuchel, in light of Ben Chilwell also picking up an injury recently, which has led to the Blues reportedly having enquired after Everton’s Lucas Digne. Dest, though, could be better value.
