There are many reasons to be happy with the summer transfer window so far if you are a Foxes fan. Manager Brendan Rodgers has quietly gone about his business, making a couple of very shrewd signings.
Having brought in 22-year-old prolific striker Patson Daka from RB Salzburg for £23 million as well as all-round midfielder Boubakary Soumare, 22, from Lille for £17 million, the club also added experienced left-back Ryan Bertrand from Southampton on a free transfer.
Now, it is being reported that they have turned their attention to a new winger and Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio is understood to be high on their shortlist, having been dubbed surplus to requirements by Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti.
While Rodgers has reiterated that there is not a bottomless pit of money available for the East Midlands outfit, there is no doubt that his dealings in the window so far have been particularly astute.
Asensio, is likely to command a fee in the region of £20 million, however, the Spanish side is keen to sell, in order to ease financial burdens, which means that there could well be room for negotiation.
However, they could well face competition for the 25-year-old with fellow Premier League clubs Everton and Leeds United reportedly expressing their interest in the player, so it could well be a case of how much impact that Rodgers thinks the player can make.
Would Asensio be a good fit at Leicester?
There is no doubting that the player has a lot of potential, however, he is at the age now, where he needs to start showing it. Asensio has been in and out of the starting XI at Real Madrid, displaying obvious glimpses of quality, though was often overlooked by bigger-name players.
Last season, he demonstrated that when given the opportunity, he can perform, having made 35 La Liga appearances, scoring five goals, and registering two assists; his best campaign so far.
Under a boss like Rodgers who has a track record of getting the best out of players, he could definitely flourish, in a team that has quality throughout. He would likely draw some comparisons to former winger Riyad Mahrez if he was able to live up to his potential, with Asensio having similar amounts of flair.
Despite new signings being important for the club, a higher priority is keeping hold of playmaker, James Maddison, who has been courted by Arsenal since the end of the season.
Should he stay, we could well see the beginning of an effective partnership between the two players, with Maddison potentially the perfect foil for Asensio.
Should Rodgers decide against Asensio, it is thought that the club also have Italian Euro 2020 winner Domenico Berardi on their shortlist, in addition to West Bromwich Albion’s Matheus Pereira, Manchester United’s Daniel James, and PSV Eindhoven’s 19-year-old English sensation Noni Madueke.
A new winger can definitely be regarded as a priority for the Foxes though, with only 31-year-old Marc Albrighton and Harvey Barnes the club’s only realistic options.
