Man Utd in hunt to sign Portuguese ace Neves

Last Updated on by James King

It is understood that Manchester United are leading the race to sign wantaway Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves this January as the quest to sign a midfielder heats up.

Since Ralph Ragnick arrived at Old Trafford as interim boss, it is hard to argue that the club’s form has been any different to what it was under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, one glaring problem that exists, as it did under the Norweigan, is the lack of a specialist defensive midfielder.

Does Neves fit the bill?

Since arriving at the West Midlands side, Neves has been a key component of a team that likes to play attacking football, built on a solid foundation and is crucial to their 3-4-3 formation.

His ability to read the pattern of play to break up attacks in addition to his passing ability and range, could be vital assets to United, who have struggled to find such a player, arguably since the days of Paul Scholes.

At Old Trafford, Neves would link up with fellow Portuguese stars Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo which could essentially mean that three Iberian footballers make up the spine of a starting XI.

Despite the 24-year-old still having two years left on his current contract, it is understood that he wants to play Champions League football and being a client of super agent Jorge Mendes, who has strong ties to Man Utd, through Ronaldo, a deal could be on the cards.

It is likely that Wolves would sell for no less than £40 million, however, manager Bruno Lage reportedly wants funds to strengthen his squad in the winter window, which mean a deal could well be negotiated.

Neves would certainly be an upgrade in that particular role, with Paul Pogba arguably not defensively disciplined enough, Nemanja Matic past the peak of his powers, Scott McTominay very much still raw, Fred failing to live up to potential and the jury still being out on Donny van de Beek.

Other alternatives for United?

It seems that this is a position that Ragnick has prioritised for January and while a concrete offer for Neves is yet to be made, respected sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter that the club are monitoring the situation of Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria who is out of contract in the summer.

A number of other clubs are understood to be keen on the Swiss 25-year-old, who has become an effective player in the Bundesliga and for his country, however, his future currently, remains undecided.
